Great Effects With Lights
By: Inside Planning
Lights and lighting are an integral part of life on earth. Without lights there would be perpetual darkness. We would never have known the meaning of day. Just imagine what we would do under perpetual darkness; perpetual rest and sleep is out of the question – the chance will come for people to enjoy that in their graves. Without lights the world would be like a coin with only one side. We don’t trade with one sided coins. What then is the other side? Perpetual lights and sunshine.
With the advantage of lights, the world economic and social machinery would grind on perpetually too. With no rest in store, the machinery would finally break down and result in a complete halt. The sun with its different shades of heat may be helpful to help man design the life he wants. But should the sun emanates the same heat intensity perpetually, the wells, ponds, lakes, rivers and the sea would boil furiously eliminating all life in it. Ice at the poles will melt causing great catastrophes around the globe. Snow from the mountain peaks of the Himalayas, Fuji and the other snow capped mountains will be converted into torrents of ferocious water streams running down mountain slopes at deadly speed erasing all life in its way. That is the global scenario should the world be run on a one-sided coin. Thus, for the world and life at large, the system of dualism – light and darkness – prevails operating on an organized divine decree.
We see lights emanating heat of various degrees of intensity suitable with the various requirements of life on earth. And if we care to take time off to observe the beauty and wonders of nature, we will be awed at the amazing light spectrum created in the environment as a result of the interplay of lights with the other creations all around us. Just visualize a tantalizing sunset on the horizon at almost dusk. Such awe-inspiring beauty of nature. Because of the perfect positioning of the sun’s rays and controlled intensity of the sun’s heat and light, we are able to enjoy the spectrum of rainbow colors on earth which would otherwise have been all white or dull and colorless.
We can emulate this divine intelligence to a certain degree by manipulating the light lights we have from electrical instruments. If you dare to experiment, you will find that there are practically hundreds of ways of lighting that can be applied to a room. When making choices on lighting, try to think of them from two perspectives; esthetical and functional. Functionally, the lighting will assure the correct type and quantity of lights needed for the purpose in mind. Esthetically, lighting can be easily configured to create the desired atmosphere.
Lighting is one of the most important elements of interior decoration. It is the instrument that generates different atmospheres to the room, from intimacy to enthusiasm. However, it is important to know four types of illumination if we want to create the desired effect we are looking for. Ambient lighting or general lighting is for the entire room and is recommended along with the use of intensity adjustments, to have more flexibility in creating effects for every occasion. Local lights assure the light flowing around in the room in order to make comfortable activities such as reading, cooking and shaving. The intensity of the light is local and it has to be correctly measured so it would not trouble or exhaust the eyes. Accent lights are sources of lights with ornamental purposes, usually placed to emboss an art object or a preferred corner. We are also accessible to natural light that varies in intensity and color depending on the period of the day, season or weather and we get this free through windows and doors.
In harnessing the great effects of lighting, you need to make a proper analysis of your everyday activities. You should know what you will do and where you will do it. For goodness sake, use different types of illumination to create very interesting effects. Remember that lighting can alter the seeming dimensions of a room, making it look bigger or smaller.
If you are trying to choose lights for your living room, it would be useful to remember the following. Place a lamp behind every armchair; use an accent light to emboss a painting or underline the contour of your bookshelves. Be sure that general lights are adjustable. To cover the walls with lights, you can use indirect lights. Place these lights below the floor or in spaces behind the furniture.
